Jack Nicholson - A few Good Men

Jack Nicholson - A few Good Men

“You want Answer’s? You can’t Handle the deuce” – Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men

OK…. that wasn’t exactly Jack Nicholson’s line, but since we’re headed back to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to headline an awesome New Year’s Eve bash for the troops, he told us you needed to hear it just like that!

Why, you ask? Because he told us take “The Deuce” as guest drums to stand on the wall with us!

He went on to say “You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties you want State of Man on that wall.  You need State of Man on that wall!

We use words like “the deuce”, “drums”, “them. We use these words to describe Mike Froedge (doubleDrive, Speed X) and Chris Presta (Soulphood),  who each rocked the State of Man drummer auditions like no one else!  The band has each the time and the inclination to bring them both drummers to The Rock – to rock –  while you rise and sleep under the blanket of the very freedom that the troops they entertain provide!”

‘They are taking two drummers’ you ask? You’re G@% D@%N right they are!”

Down Colonel, down!

We’ve got some other guest musicians as well, so we’ll make sure to get on the list (click here) for a sneak peek.  That’s an order!

Fender Road Worn Series (60’s Stratocaster and more)

Fender Road Worn Tele

Fender Road Worn Telecaster

Knowing that both John and I have rocked a Fender electric on stage, I found this story to be quite interesting and exciting. On January 2, 2009, Musician’s Friend announced the launch of  Fender’s Road Worn guitar series, which portrays a guitar that has been rocked out and loved for years. The new series will debut at Winter NAMM 2009, a music trade show, on January 15-18th. The pre-order process has already begun and they plan on shipping on the highly anticipated guitars in the next few weeks.

So what is the fuss about Fender’s Road Worn? Well, many of the guitarists who have tested it, were drawn to its comfort and “broken in” feel. According to Musician’s Friend, the new series “incorporates vintage specs without the hefty price tag”. In addition, “each guitar is shipped in perfect playing condition, though it wears the scars of life on the road.” One look at these guitars, and you can immediately sense how much they’ve gone through (countless gigs, touring, hot stage lights etc…).

As of right now, Fender has created five models that include two Stratocaster models, a Telecaster, a Precision Bass, and a Jazz Bass. From what I’ve heard, each one of these guitars/basses sound AMAZING. From the pick-ups to the look and feel of it, this guitar was made to be rocked out!

If you see me rocking one (or if Fender wants to send me one) you’ll know all about the story.  And if you try one out, we would love to hear your thoughts/experience!

Confessions of a Drum Addict

Chris Love (State of Man) live on Drums

Chris Love (State of Man) live on Drums

Recently, State of Man received the question “How did each of the members get into music…,” so I decided to blog about it.

I was first introduced to a musical instrument in a Washington D.C. elementary school. I was given the task of playing the trumpet. I can not say I was excited by this, however, I did attempt this challenging feat. Unfortunately, I gave it up to pursue athletic ventures.
When I was ten years old, my Step Father introduced me to a whole world of musical instruments, as he was an avid player. With a room full of guitars, keyboards, and drums, I was magically drawn to the instrument I continue to play to this day.
I remember I would sit behind his Premiere drum set and play for hours at a time, to what ever music I could find. I was fascinated by the sounds of classic rock acts, such as The Who, Jimi Hendrix and Cream. It was the busy and melodic drum lines that captivated me and kept me in our basement driving my Mother crazy. Fortunately for me, my parents were very supportive as I continued to learn and grow as a drummer.
I continued to play through the years and found classmates, who were also interested in music. We formed a band and soon performed at school dances and other town functions. In my senor year of High School, we even recorded an album and released it locally to decent reviews. I still look back on those early days and I am amazed how the drums called to me and stayed with me throughout my life, knowing that without them, my journey would have been so different.
Hope you enjoyed this walk down memory lane and never underestimate the power of music!

Thanks for reading and see you soon,
Chris Love

Why I Get Low

So, I guess the questions looms: “why/ how did I get into music?” Kind of a funny story actually. I was about 13 at the time and was forming a garage band in my town of Voorhees NJ. I would get together with a couple of friends from the neighborhood and we would crank up our amps to “11”..haha..I took the glorious task of singing (or attempting to) and it was kind of a mess. I remember the bass player wearing his dads military helmet from his tour in Vietnam and the drummer had a tiny kit with the name “Violent Society” scratched onto his kickdrum…so yep, we became the crappiest band in town called Violent society.

It was after our second practice (if you wanna call it that) that we decided that the bass player and I should try to switch up to see if we could make things any better. I guess any improvement was welcome at that time! Well now, I picked up that bass guitar and my life changed forever. I just loved the way it felt and how the strings played. It wasn’t long before I had picked up my first peavey bass and a Peavy TNT 150 bass amp to rehearse on. I started taking lessons religiously and learned how to play a ton of Led Zeppelin songs. (Needless to say I am a huge John Paul Jones fan).

My high school years ended and I went off to college at West Virginia University where I promptly started jamming in a college cover band to make extra cash on the side. The college band turned into something more and eventually I found myself signing a contract to come to Atlanta around the Olympics to open for nationals. So now you know how I got into music and found my way to Atlanta to ultimately meet the guys and put together the band we now call “State of Man”!

No Matter what, Follow your heart and your dreams and the rest will take care of itself!

America’s Golden Boy? The Michael Phelps’ Drug Fiasco

Posted in State of Man Journal, State of Man News with tags , , , , on February 12, 2009 by stateofman
Golden Boy or Fallen Idol?

Michael Phelps: Golden Boy or Fallen Idol?

There is no hiding from the media frenzy that has been surrounding Michael Phelps within the last week or so.  After admitting that a popular photo of him taking a bong rip was actually real, the incredible athlete has felt the consequences.  He has lost sponsorships, a lot of fans and, from some, a great amount of respect.  Some have argued that he doesn’t deserve his gold medals.  Some are simply dumbfounded that such a great athlete would even “try” drugs.  No matter where you stand on the issue, one thing is for sure – you have an opinion.

Celebrities acting “immorally” has been a hot topic for as long as fame existed.  Just look at the careers of Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and most recently, Alex Rodriguez.  These people can not do anything without being analyzed and chastised about their decisions.  It’s obvious that nobody is perfect, but when celebrities aren’t perfect, the news reminds us of the notion.  The media gobble up this kind of news because it is interesting and because people like you and I care about these “outstanding people.”

Of course, while none of us would argue that doing drugs isn’t a negative thing, we collectivley have mixed opinions on the whole Michael Phelps situation.  We agree that he should have known better and we understand that he was acting illegally.  We know that he is a role model to the youth in America, so the whole situation brings certain questions to light – Should the public be more understanding?  Do these actions decrease his swimming talents or does that even matter? Was it the right thing to do for the companies that decided to continue to sponsor him?  Was it the right thing to do for companies that canceled their sponsorships?  Should there be a greater line between being a celebrity and being a private human being?

We’d love to hear what you think.

“Swallow Your Fears” Fan Feedback – Got a story?

Image via Wikipedia

We’ve received so many great emails on how our new single, “Swallow Your Fears,” and our other songs have helped others that we’ve decided to create a dedicated page on www.stateofmanmusic.com (c0ming soon) to share your stories.

Here is just one example that we hope you can appreciate as much as we do:

I don’t think I have ever truly expressed how much your music means to me. Its hard to put into words, I get choked up any time I think of just how much you’ve influenced my life. I think I would have given up on myself a long time ago if it weren’t for a signing you did at Montgomery’s Eastdale Mall back in 2006(ish?). I’d gone out of curiosity, and you convinced me to stay on for a show that night at one of the local bars. I’ve been hooked ever since.

I’ve always struggled a little with depression and I’m slow to put my trust in others, and though both are still a daily struggle, “Swallow Your Fears” has always given me the courage to continue moving forward.

I was floored when I listened to “We All Fall Down” for the first time tonight. I actually cried! Whenever I fall, music is what helps me pick myself up, brush myself off, and keep going. Yours is truly inspirational. Thank you for creating such beautiful songs; they have always helped me stay positive when I needed words of encouragement.

I’m always thinking of you guys and wishing you the best. Oysterfest was fun, I can’t wait ’til our paths cross again. I don’t care how far the drive, ya’ll are worth it! Its always a joy to see ya’ll.

Take care,

Kerri

Greater Chicago Food Depository

State of Man will join the Greater Chicago Food Depository on July 24, 2009 to assist with sorting food from 9AM – 12PM and  perform live at 101.9 WTMX’s ”Taste of Lincoln Ave” Festival on July 25, 4PM on the Rightwood Main Stage, as part of the band’s Service2Humanity Tour stop in Chicago.  Only 6 more volunteers can join band members for the service project, so feel free to arrive on site early following the Greater Chicago Food Depository provided information below.

SERVICE2HUMANITY CHICAGO PROJECT INFO

When: Friday, July 24, 2009 from 9am – 12pm

Where: 4100 W. Ann Lurie Place, Chicago IL 60632

Who We Are

As Cook County’s food bank, the Greater Chicago Food Depository distributes more than 55 million pounds of food each year.  A large portion of this food must be inspected or sorted and then packaged before it can be safely distributed through a network of over 600 member agencies (food pantries, kitchens, shelters, etc).  Volunteers complete much of this work.  Frequent projects involve re-packaging bulk cereal or pasta, sorting bread or canned food donations, or gleaning produce.

Requirements

Dress: Volunteers must wear long pants and close-toed shoes.

You will not be permitted to work in the warehouse if you are wearing sandals or shorts/skirt.

Age: Our minimum age for volunteers is 13 years old.  For volunteers under the age of 16, we require a 1:4 supervision ratio (one adult for every four 13-15 year olds).

What To Expect

Orientation: Before working, we provide a brief orientation for all new volunteers.  We will talk about how the Food Depository functions, who we serve, and answer any questions you may have about our operation.

Work Session: You will spend the majority of the session repacking food in the warehouse.  Groups may be given a short break halfway through a three hour session. Volunteers must be able to stand for up to 90 minutes while doing some light lifting and bending.

What To Bring?

We ask that each volunteer bring an item of canned or non-perishable food to donate. A list of most needed food items is available upon request.

We encourage volunteers not to bring personal belongings to the facility; however, a limited number of lockers are available if needed.

Can an Independent Artist Raise $350K?

Posted in State of Man News with tags , , , , , , , on July 20, 2009 by stateofman

ITP_cropped
Can an Independent artist raise $350K in less than two months just by clarifying their vision, following their hearts and believing that what they are doing creates enough value to justify asking the public for help? We believe we can and we believe our cause – to take positive Music and Action across the USA – is worth whatever risk is involved. We’re doing this to see if it will work; to see if it can actually happen. Again, we believe it can and hope a lot of people believe in what we’re doing enough to contribute and help us spread the word. We’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain! Calling on volunteers for the Service2Humanity Tour & United Way Day of Action in Chattanooga, TN

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , on June 17, 2009 by stateofman

If you are in or near Chattanooga, TN, we have two great opportunities for you on June 18 and June 20 to help United Way & Habitat for Humanity make a positive difference:

  1. Service2Humanity Tour | Chattanooga/Ringgold – June 18, 2009
Join State of Man for the Service2Humanity Tour as we volunteer with United Way Chattanooga to help Heartland Ranch.  Located in beautiful North Georgia minutes from Chattanooga, TN,  Heartland Ranch is a nonprofit summer camp for children with developmental disabilities, severe trauma and high risk issues.  Heartland strives to improve the needs of children of all ages.  The children of Heartland experience self confidence and improvement in strength, balance, coordination, attention span, language and social skills.

Volunteers are needed to help with construction of the tack room, building of short return wall, removal of fronts and door, removal of wall board and our project will run from 12pm – 4pm, followed by acoustic performance from State of Man (and free CDs)!

To volunteer, contact Joyce McNish at 423-544-9611 or via email at joycemcnish [at] bellsouth . net.

  2. United Way Day of Action, June 20, 2009

United Way of Greater Chattanooga is the place to get involved in community engagement and it asks everyone to GIVE, ADVOCATE or VOLUNTEER to make a difference in this area.  It joins United Ways across the country in the second annual United Way Day of Action. This year’s Day of Action – Saturday, June 20, from noon to 3 p.m. at Hamilton Place Mall – will support early education by kicking off a volunteer recruitment drive that calls on this community to “Do what it takes to LIVE UNITED” by volunteering to help kids prepare for early education.

United Way will work to recruit 1,000 VOLUNTEERS for Early Childhood Education between June 20 and August 23, 2009. The results of this 9-week volunteer drive will be announced at the Chattanooga Market’s LIVE UNITED DAY on Sunday, August 23.

The United Way will hold a DO WHAT IT TAKES” VOLUNTEER DRIVE KICKOFF AT HAMILTON PLACE MALL. United Way, accompanied by several early childhood-focused community agencies, will take action in Hamilton Place Mall at the Comcast Stage by recruiting people to volunteer in the area of early childhood education. The first 20 people to sign up to volunteer at Hamilton Place Mall on June 20 will receive a free LIVE UNITED t-shirt.

United Way’s Kick-off coincides with a daylong Public Forum “WHAT IT TAKES” COMMUNITY FORUM ON EARLY GRADE SUCCESS IN SCHOOL to be held at the UTC University Center. The forum will focus on what government, non-profits, parents teachers and county leaders can do better to ensure school success for Hamilton County children. Last year, an Ochs Center study found that one in four children in Hamilton County were “at risk” of not being ready when they enter kindergarten. A School Readiness Advisory Board, made up of leading practitioners and key collaborative partners, is working with the Ochs Center to ensure community ownership and sustainability of the effort to improve education and early childhood interventions in our county. The forum is the latest effort in ongoing research and planning work being conducted on school readiness and early education. It is funded by the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga and the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

Along with the United Way, members of the School Readiness Advisory board include: Chattanooga Department of Human Services, Chattanooga State Technical Community College, Child Care Resource and Referral, Children’s Home/Chambliss Shelter, Hamilton County Department of Education, Hamilton County Parents Are First Teachers Program, Head Start, Orange Grove Center, Public Education Foundation, Project Ready for School, READ 20, Signal Centers, Inc., Siskin Children’s Institute, Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth, Tennessee Department of Human Services.

“When children are successful in school, it prevents social problems before they happen, according to research,” said Linda McReynolds, senior Vice-President of Organizational Development at United Way. “When members of our community donate their time and talent to improve local education, they teach children important lessons about caring, citizenship and social responsibility, while also helping them become more prepared learners.”

United Way’s drive to recruit 1,000 volunteers will extend to college campuses, local employers, and other organizations in addition to the general public. There are two ways to sign up to volunteer:

·   sign up at Hamilton Place Mall on June 20 from noon to 3 p.m.; or

·   sign up at the web site http://tinyurl.com/whatittakeshamiltoncounty

You can find out more about these events on the Ochs Center Web Site or the United Way web site, which will be updated regularly as new volunteer opportunities become available. For information about other special events in 2009, or to look for other ways to take action through giving, advocating and volunteering, call the United Way Volunteer Center at 423-752-0316 or go to www.LiveUnitedChattanooga.org.
